The Fall singer Mark E Smith dies
English singer, songwriter and musician Mark E Smith, the lead singer of the post-punk group the Fall, has died aged 60. Smith passed away on Wednesday (Jan. 24) after a long illness.
The band manager Pam Van Damned released a statement on Facebook, saying “It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mark E. Smith […] A more detailed statement will follow in the next few days. In the meantime, Pam & Mark’s family request privacy at this sad time.”
The Fall formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. They underwent many line up changes, with vocalist and founder Mark E. Smith as the only constant member. The Fall’s long term musicians have included drummers Paul Hanley and Karl Burns; guitarists Marc Riley, Craig Scanlon and Brix Smith; and bassist Steve Hanley, whose melodic playing is widely credited with shaping the band’s sound from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s.
