Jennifer Lopez’s relatives in Puerto Rico missing after Hurricane Maria
Hurricane Maria, the strongest tropical cyclone to strike Puerto Rico in more than 80 years, reduced homes to heaps of splintered wood and crumbling concrete, turned streets into rivers of churning brown water and left the island without power.
On Thursday night (Sept.21) singer Jennifer Lopez shared a video expressing her upset over the natural disaster in her home country and said she has no idea whether her relatives in Puerto Rico are still alive.
In the footage posted on her Instagram page, captioned “Please help us spread the word to help our fellow sisters and brothers in need”, Jennifer said: “What’s on my mind is what’s going on in Puerto Rico. The devastation is beyond belief. Me and my cousin still haven’t been able to hear from our families over there.”
At the time of writing, Hurricane Maria has killed 15 people in Puerto Rico to date, and 20 more in other Caribbean islands, and followed in the footsteps of Hurricane Irma, which also caused devastation in those places.
“Today, Puerto Rico needs our help. I urge you to support and donate to the efforts of the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Areizaga,” she said. “Together we can help rebuild our island, and the Caribbean.”
“Los quiero y nuestras oraciones están con ustedes” were Lopez’ last words in the clip, in which she speaks both English and Spanish. You can see it below.
