The ‘King of Bolero’ Lucho Gatica dies
Lucho Gatica, the Chilean singer known as “the King of Bolero,” has died at age 90 on Tuesday (Nov. 13) in Mexico City, where he lived.
Being such a strong and important personality in music, his death immediately made headlines not only in Mexico and Chile, but around Latin America and Spain.
Gatica burst onto the Latin scene in the early 1950s with records of “Me Importas Tú,” “Contigo en la Distancia,” “Besame Mucho” and other songs which are eternal gems of the Latin songbook. His interpretation of Roberto Cantoral’s “el Reloj” also became a signature.
The singer is survived by seven sons and eleven grandchildren.
