Ricky Martin donates $100,000 to Hurricane Maria crowdfunding campaign
Following Jennifer Lopez’s initiative (the singer donated $1 million to hurricane relief efforts) singer Ricky Martin has donated $100,000 to a crowdfunding campaign he launched to benefit the victims of Hurricane Maria in his native Puerto Rico.
After natural disasters, the island of Puerto Rico has been totally destroyed and without communication with the whole world. Thousands of people have lost their homes and the whole country has lost electricity and it is estimated that it will take six months or more to recover.
Martin is collecting donations via a YouCaring crowdfunding page, telling his fans, “I decided to create this page to collect funds to provide the basic needs and rebuild all that was lost.”
Moreover the singer shared a message of concern and frustration on Instagram, revealing that he’d not received any news from one of his brother, who resides in Puerto Rico: “I am very worried because I haven’t been able to get in touch with my brother. We don’t know where he is. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s dealing with this uncertainty,” he said in the video, adding “I’m sure there are many people living outside of or on the island who have not been able to talk to their families due to communication issues.”
Martin also urged fans to send money to his fundraising campaign, which he launched a few days ago to rebuild his home island and help the victims of Maria’s destruction. “We reached our goal and now we have to aim for more because there is a lot left to do,” he said, imploring his audience: “Please donate. One dollar that you give is one dollar that will get to the victims.”
“Puerto Rico is going through one of the toughest times in its history, and the island desperately needs us,” Martin says. “Hurricane Maria left devastating damage and affected hundreds of thousands – that’s why I decided to create this fundraiser to help provide basic needs and rebuild all that was lost. My donation of $100,000 is already in, and I hope I can count on your support.“
