The Weeknd donates $250,000 to Black Lives Matter
The Weeknd has donated $250,000 to the Black Lives Matter Network movement. The “Can’t Feel My Face” singer appears to be in a giving mood since earlier this month, he also donated $50,000 to the University of Toronto to help start an Ethiopic Studies program. This big donation comes from the fact that his parents are from Ethiopia.
As regards Black Lives Matter, for those who do not know it advocates for racial justice, particularly in light of a spate of African-American deaths at the hands of police in controversial encounters across the US, such as Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, who were fatally shot by cops in separate incidents in July.
“Enough is enough,” The Weeknd tweeted last month. “it’s time to stand up for this. we can either sit and watch, or do something about it. the time is now. #blacklivesmatter.”
Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013 by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi. The organization has garnered attention after rebuking police treatment of minorities.
